Locality:
Setúbal is a city and a municipality of Portugal. The population in 2014 was 118,166, occupying an area of 230.33 km 2 . The city itself had 89,303 inhabitants in 2001. It is located in the metropolitan area of Lisbon.
Setúbal was at the beginning of the 20th century the most important Pole of Portuguese fishing, with emphasis on sardines. None of the many factories then created are operating today. However, existing seaports, whether traditional, commercial and new Marines, maintain the city's connections with the ocean and the waters very vivid and vibrant. Tourism, based on the beautiful existing natural conditions, the most excellent hotels, resorts and infrastructures, is one of the most valued resources of the city, due to its interconnected location with the Sado on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, having a coastline with both. It is also connected to the nearby coast of the Serra da Arrábida Natural Park - which offers a virgin nature and beautiful beaches to the Atlantic Ocean. A dolphin colony inhabits the Sado River. Across the river on the south bank is the Trojan peninsula, a place with vast white/gold sandy beaches where several luxury hotels and resorts have recently been built. The Troia peninsula can be seen from the city, across the river. Albarquel, Figueirinha, Galápos, Galapinhos and Portinho da Arrábida are some of the city's many beaches, situated on the northern shore of the ria, at the beginning of the Arrábida mountain range.
The main historical monument of the city of Setúbal is the Monastery of Jesus, with a church from the 15th and 16th centuries that represents one of the first buildings of late Gothic Portuguese known as Manueline.
Also of interest are the Church of St. Julian, also with Manueline portals. The Castle of St. Philip, is a fortress of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries on the north bank of the River Sado, watching the city. The fortress has been transformed into a luxury hotel (inn).
